AkzoNobel Wins 350,352 Liter Ship Coating Bid Boosts Production for Growing Market

ECHEMI 2025-06-16

AkzoNobel’s Suzhou Protective Coatings subsidiary has secured a 350,352-liter ship coating contract worth approximately 485.24 tons, according to the bidding results announced by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The contract includes:

  • 83,280 liters of zinc-rich epoxy primer (85% zinc content).
  • 129,320 liters of polyamide epoxy resin paint (80%).
  • 59,980 liters of polyurethane topcoat (RAL7010).
  • Various other primers, topcoats, and thinners.

AkzoNobel, founded in 2006 in Suzhou, specializes in high-performance industrial coatings for sectors like marine, oil and gas, and wind power. In 2022, it achieved 11 billion yuan in sales, with 2023’s first three quarters surpassing 8 billion yuan. Sales for 2024 are expected to rise by 40% year-over-year.

To meet rising demand, the Suzhou plant’s high-performance coatings project launched in 2022, increasing daily production capacity by 40%. Additional investments include:

  • 8,000 tons of wind turbine blade coatings.
  • 18,250 tons of high-performance coatings with environmental upgrades.
  • 7,000 tons of solvent-free fireproof coatings.

Upgrades will double capacity by late 2025, positioning AkzoNobel among the top global players.

This contract aligns with China's expanding shipbuilding sector, valued at over 100 billion yuan in 2023. CSSC is strengthening its position in high-value ships, including polar icebreakers and LNG carriers. With AkzoNobel ranked third in China’s coatings industry, the company is seizing opportunities in the booming marine market.
