BASF Partners with Three Energy Giants to Build Closed-Loop Ecosystem for Clean Energy
June 2025 – BASF has announced a strategic collaboration with Gotion High-Tech, China Gas Holdings, and BASF Shanshan Battery Materials, forming an unprecedented partnership focused on advancing energy storage systems, innovative battery materials, and green energy solutions. This alliance aims to create a closed-loop clean energy ecosystem and drive innovation in energy storage technologies.
Each partner brings unique expertise to the table:
- China Gas Holdings, a leading integrated energy provider, is pivoting toward low-carbon and smart energy services, including an innovative “storage + biomass” business model.
- Gotion High-Tech, ranked seventh globally with a 6% market share, shipped 22GWh of energy storage batteries in 2024, representing a 200% growth. The company recently unveiled the Qianyuan Smart Storage 20MWh system, the largest single-cell storage system globally. Gotion is also advancing semi-solid and solid-state batteries, with 12GWh semi-solid production capacity planned and commercialization of solid-state batteries targeted by 2030.
- BASF, a global leader in battery materials, is accelerating efforts in solid-state battery development and high-performance cathode active materials (CAM). The company’s Schwarzheide Black Mass facility, launched this month, is capable of recycling 15,000 tons of spent lithium-ion batteries annually, recovering critical metals like lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese.
This partnership not only strengthens the clean energy supply chain but also accelerates commercial adoption of advanced energy storage technologies, including solid-state batteries and sustainable recycling solutions.
