Vietnam to Export Renewable Energy via Undersea Cable to Malaysia and Singapore
Vietnam has reached an agreement with Malaysia and Singapore to export renewable energy through an undersea cable connecting the power grids of the three nations. The project, which is part of the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, aims to facilitate regional electricity sharing and expand cross-border renewable energy trade.
The collaboration involves key players from all three countries. In Malaysia, the project will be implemented by the Malaysia Energy Consortium, led by national energy giants Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Petronas. Vietnam’s role is led by PTSC, a subsidiary of the state-owned Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, while Singapore’s participation is through Sembcorp Utilities, a division of Sembcorp Industries.
The project will explore the technical and commercial feasibility of the undersea cable and consider building supporting infrastructure, including energy storage systems to ensure power supply stability.
For Vietnam, this initiative is expected to create new economic opportunities by exporting renewable energy while enhancing the country’s international influence in green growth and low-carbon development.
This agreement is seen as a major milestone for the ASEAN region’s energy cooperation, marking a critical step toward achieving a shared vision of sustainable energy and a low-carbon future.
