Siemens to Close Ontario Factory by 2027 Shifts Production to Concord

Siemens has announced plans to gradually shut down its manufacturing facility in Peterborough, Ontario, over the next two years. The closure impacts the Measurement Intelligence production line, which will be relocated to the Concord facility. However, product management and R&D functions related to Measurement Intelligence will remain in Peterborough. This restructuring is expected to affect approximately 160 manufacturing jobs, with the transition scheduled for completion by September 2027.

The Concord facility, currently manufacturing Siemens RuggedCom communication devices, will add around 70 new manufacturing positions to accommodate the incoming production line. Siemens has assured comprehensive support for affected employees, while highlighting that there are 100 open positions across Canada for which impacted workers will be prioritized.

Siemens Canada, headquartered in Oakville, Ontario, operates in sectors such as industrial automation and healthcare. Recent investments include the global battery production and R&D center in Ontario and a partnership with the Alberta Cancer Foundation to upgrade cancer care technologies. Additionally, Siemens collaborates with Toronto’s MaRS Innovation Hub to provide Xcelerator software for over 1,400 Canadian tech companies, supporting advancements in autonomous driving and connected vehicle technologies.

Globally, Siemens continues to expand its operations. Siemens Healthineers recently announced a $150 million investment to relocate the Varian production line from Mexico to California and establish large supply warehouses in New Jersey and California, boosting supply chain resilience by 30%. In North Carolina, Siemens plans to build a 60,000-square-foot medical innovation center to help healthcare providers digitize and transform services.

Siemens emphasized that this restructuring in Canada is a strategic move to enhance local efficiency while aligning with its global industrial automation strategy. By optimizing supply chains and responding to diverse customer needs with agility, Siemens aims to maintain its industry leadership in an increasingly competitive market.
