$658 Million Phosphate Project in Egypt Signals Major Industrial Shift
The Egyptian government has officially signed the final construction contract for a $658 million phosphate production complex in the Western Desert. This project represents a key step in Egypt's strategy to transition from exporting raw materials to developing high-value industrial products.
Located on the Abu Tartur plateau in New Valley Governorate, the first phase of the facility will leverage domestic phosphate reserves to produce 250,000 tons of high-purity phosphoric acid annually. Key Egyptian companies involved include Abu Qir Fertilizers and Misr Phosphate, with construction spearheaded by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) and East China Engineering Science and Technology (ECEC).
Egypt’s Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy hailed the project as a "historic milestone" that will end raw material exports and establish an integrated industrial value chain. Meanwhile, New Valley Governor Mohammed El-Zamlout emphasized its transformative potential, stating that the Abu Tartur complex will be the driving force behind turning the region into a strategic mining hub.
This groundbreaking initiative is set to maximize Egypt's economic returns on mineral resources while addressing the long-neglected development of the country's largest governorate.
