China Signs EPC Contract for 34 km Tanzania Gas Pipeline Project

ECHEMI 2025-07-08

Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract to China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. Ltd. and China Petroleum Technology & Development Corporation, subsidiaries of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). The project involves building a 34-kilometer high-pressure gas pipeline from the Ntorya Gas Field to the Madimba Gas Processing Plant, which has a daily capacity of 210 million cubic feet.

According to CNPC Pipeline Engineering’s official website, the project is located in Mtwara Province in southern Tanzania. It includes the construction of a 14-inch pipeline, along with key supporting facilities such as a main station, valve chambers, and receiving station. The EPC scope covers the entire process, including design, procurement, supervision, construction, commissioning, drying, intelligent pigging, and production initiation.

The Ntorya Gas Field is being jointly developed by TPDC, Aminex PLC, and ARA Petroleum Tanzania (APT), with APT serving as the operator. The Tanzanian Ministry of Energy issued a development license for the field in Q3 2024, following successful tests confirming reserves of 1.8 trillion cubic feet. During testing, individual wells achieved an average daily production of 20 million cubic feet.

Under a gas sales agreement signed in January 2024 between APT and TPDC, the field's first-year production is projected at 40-60 million cubic feet per day, with plans to ramp up to 140 million cubic feet per day within a few years.
