EU Approves Market Entry for Genetically Modified Soybeans MON 87705 × MON 87708 × MON 89788

ECHEMI 2025-07-08

On July 7, 2025, the European Commission issued Regulation (EU) 2025/1321, officially approving the market placement of foods and feed containing or produced from genetically modified soybean MON 87705 × MON 87708 × MON 89788. This decision also extends to products containing these GM soybeans for non-food and non-feed uses, excluding cultivation.

The application for approval was initially submitted on September 11, 2015, by Monsanto Europe S.A./N.V., representing the US-based Monsanto Company. The request complies with Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 and includes provisions for labeling, detection methods, and environmental monitoring.

To ensure safety and compliance, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reviewed the application, evaluating the proposed monitoring plan for environmental impacts based on a general surveillance system. Despite the lack of a definitive opinion from the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed, the appeal committee moved forward with the regulation.

This approval marks a significant milestone, paving the way for the expanded use of genetically modified crops in the European Union under strict regulatory oversight.
