Trump Sets 19 Percent Tariff on All Indonesian Exports to US $1.9 Billion Seafood Trade Faces Uncertainty
US President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping 19% tariff on all Indonesian goods exported to the United States, while American exports to Indonesia will remain duty-free. The announcement did not include specific details about the new trade agreement or whether the tariff rate could change.
Indonesia is a key US agricultural and seafood supplier. In 2022, agriculture made up 20% of Indonesia’s $34.5 billion exports to the US, according to the US Department of Commerce. By 2024, Indonesia had become the fourth-largest seafood source for the US, with exports valued at $1.9 billion—primarily shrimp, tuna, crab, and tilapia.
Indonesia’s Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, urged the fishing industry to seek alternative markets amid escalating trade tensions. With no reciprocal tariffs on US products, the new policy could reshape the trade balance and disrupt Indonesia’s crucial seafood exports.
