Trump Slaps 25 Percent Tariff on Indian Imports US Shrimp Imports Hit with 33 Percent Total Levy
On July 30, US President Trump announced a hefty 25% tariff on goods imported from India, effective August 1. Citing India’s high tariffs on American goods, strict trade barriers, and economic support for Russia, Trump emphasized the move was necessary despite calling India a “friend.”
For Indian seafood exporters, especially shrimp producers, the blow is severe. The new rate dwarfs those on competing Asian countries—Vietnam faces 20%, Indonesia 19%, while Ecuador has just a 10% tariff.
India is America’s largest shrimp supplier, shipping 304,000 tons valued at $2.38 billion in 2024. On top of the new tariff, Indian exporters must also contend with existing antidumping (2.49%) and countervailing duties (5.77%), bringing the combined rate to a staggering 33.26%.
By comparison, Ecuador’s total levy is 13.78%, Indonesia’s is 22.9%, and Vietnam’s combined duties hit the highest at 48.6%. US authorities typically set unified rates for each country, though some companies—like Devi Sea Foods (5.87%) and Sandhya Aqua Exports (5.63%) in India—may receive individual rates.
