Short-term Ethylene Glycol is Likely to Experience a Strong Sideways Consolidation

ECHEMI 2025-08-13

August 12th, news:

This week, the price of ethylene glycol in China has shown a strong fluctuation.

This week, the ethylene glycol price showed a strong fluctuation. According to the data, as of August 12, the average price of oil-based ethylene glycol in China was 4,483.33 CNY/ton, an increase of 1.09% from the average price of 4,435 CNY/ton on August 1.

Port MEG (ethylene glycol) spot contract prices slightly strengthened on August 12, 2025, with MEG consolidating in a narrow range during the night session. The basis for this week's spot contracts ranged from +76 to +79 CNY/ton, and the basis weakened slightly during the day. In the afternoon, the basis for this week's spot contracts ranged from +72 to +75. After the market closed, the low-hanging basis for the night session was between +77 and +78.

The spot price for coal-based polyester-grade ethylene glycol in China (bulk, tax included, self-pickup) for a full truckload is 4050-4100 CNY/ton.

In the international market for monoethylene glycol, recent cargo negotiations have been around $526-527 per ton. Subsequently, as the market strengthened, the negotiations for recent cargoes rose to around $528-531 per ton. In the afternoon, recent cargoes were traded at around $531 per ton, with some suppliers participating in restocking. Additionally, tendered goods from Taiwan were traded at around $532 per ton, with a volume of 3,000 tons.

In the short term, the probability of ethylene glycol maintaining a strong sideways consolidation is high in China.

In mid-August, the volume of foreign vessel arrivals is expected to be weaker. Overall supply and demand are relatively stable, with a positive outlook for future demand. It is anticipated that in the short term, ethylene glycol will likely experience a strong sideways consolidation. Subsequent attention should be paid to changes in facilities.
