Nippon Shokubai Invests $110 Million in Indonesia SAP Plant Global Capacity to Hit 760000 Tons by 2027

ECHEMI 2025-08-22

Nippon Shokubai has unveiled plans for a new superabsorbent polymer (SAP) factory in Cilegon, Indonesia, through its local subsidiary PT. Nippon Shokubai Indonesia (NSI), with a total investment of $110 million. The facility, set for completion in January 2027, will add 50,000 tons of annual SAP capacity, boosting the company’s global output to 760,000 tons per year.

This expansion is in direct response to soaring global SAP demand. Nippon Shokubai already operates SAP plants in key markets including Japan, the US, Europe, China, and Indonesia, supported by a robust supply chain. Notably, in 2023, the company also commissioned a 100,000-ton acrylic acid (AA) plant in Cilegon—AA being the key raw material for SAP.

By integrating the full value chain from acrylic acid to SAP, Nippon Shokubai aims to maximize synergies and efficiently serve the rapidly growing Asian market.
