EFSA Confirms Safety of Vitamin E TPGS as Food Additive New Opinion Covers Multiple Use Levels

ECHEMI 2025-08-22

On August 11, 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced its expert panel has found no safety concerns for Vitamin E polyethylene glycol succinate (TPGS) as a food additive at proposed use levels. The Food Additives and Flavourings (FAF) panel concluded that Vitamin E TPGS can be safely used as an emulsifier in various food categories.

Scientific evaluation showed that TPGS is mostly monoesters (over 82%) and less than 20% diesters, with the ester bond proving stable under testing conditions. The additive is poorly absorbed and does not serve as a vitamin E source for healthy individuals. No genotoxicity or negative effects on reproduction and development were seen at doses up to 1000 mg/kg body weight per day, the highest tested.

Given the available data, the panel employed a margin of exposure (MOE) approach and determined the calculated values were sufficient to assure safety. The EFSA’s conclusion clears the way for Vitamin E TPGS to be used in foods at the proposed levels without safety concerns.
