When Light Falls on Metal: The Industrial Romance of Xiaomi × BASF
In an increasingly crowded EV market, where performance and intelligence are no longer enough to stand out, color is becoming the new language of competition. On October 17, BASF Coatings and Xiaomi Auto announced a three-year strategic partnership to co-develop 100 innovative automotive paint colors. From “Racing Red” to “Amethyst,” from electrophoretic primer to topcoat and clear finish, the collaboration aims to redefine automotive aesthetics and turn color into the grammar of intelligent mobility. On the surface, this looks like another technical partnership — but in essence, it signals a deeper shift in how the auto industry fuses design, chemistry, and perception.
Technologically, this is a revolution of light and material. BASF’s full coating solution for Xiaomi covers the entire system — CathoGuard 800 for e-coating, SecuBloc for primer surfacer, ColorBrite for waterborne basecoat, and the ProGloss dual-component clearcoat system. Particularly noteworthy is the ProGloss 2K + ProGloss Plus 2K double clearcoat technology, which “locks in” light reflection to create multi-layered depth and mirror-like clarity. Once reserved for luxury brands, this system now gives Xiaomi’s electric vehicles a crystalline brilliance and refined surface durability. Industry experts note that such dual-clear systems improve weather resistance and scratch protection by nearly 20%, proving that Chinese EVs are now matching European craftsmanship in both beauty and precision.
From a market perspective, this collaboration turns “car color into traffic.” In a consumer era that prizes individuality and visual identity, paint is no longer just a “protective layer” — it’s the first handshake between brand and emotion. Xiaomi’s signature hues — Racing Red, Twilight Rose, Flowing Gold (Matte) — are designed to speak to the senses, blending tech with personality. Especially the Amethyst finish, with its layered reflective particles and subtle tonal gradients, captures both futuristic minimalism and luxury warmth. According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the proportion of NEV buyers choosing non-traditional colors (red, purple, pink, blue) rose by 47% year-on-year in 2024, reflecting a generational shift: for young consumers, cars are now “mobile lifestyle devices,” not just vehicles.
At the industrial level, this partnership is a strategic declaration of “supply chain aesthetics.” For decades, BASF, PPG, and AkzoNobel have dominated global automotive coatings, while Chinese firms like Junzilán and Feilu have made progress mainly in primers and mid-coats. Xiaomi’s choice of BASF underscores its intent to anchor itself within a mature global materials ecosystem while leveraging that expertise to elevate domestic EV design expression. More importantly, this alliance sets off a ripple effect across the value chain — from titanium dioxide to resin monomers and solvents, upstream suppliers are being pushed toward higher performance and sustainability standards as “aesthetic differentiation” becomes a new industrial benchmark.
It’s also worth noting that BASF’s influence in China’s auto ecosystem runs deep. Since 2021, the company’s Shanghai Global Color Design Center has forecasted and shaped color trends for the EV market — from “Intelligent Silver” to “Shadow Blue” — many of which have been adopted by local brands. The Xiaomi collaboration extends this from technical output to emotional co-creation, where color becomes a competitive dimension in its own right. If the plan to roll out 100 new shades over three years succeeds, it could become a milestone case of “sensorial disruption” in the EV industry.
In a world obsessed with range, horsepower, and AI chips, exterior color might seem like a soft topic. Yet as BASF’s VP for Automotive Coatings in Asia Pacific, Zou Jia, put it: “Color is the consumer’s first impression of a brand — and the most visible form of innovation.” When cars evolve from machines to emotional companions, color becomes the most elegant weapon in a fierce technological race. For Xiaomi, this is not just about paint; it’s about personality. For BASF, it’s not merely chemistry; it’s cultural capital.
