Canada Caffeinates Candy—With Warnings Attached
Canada is letting candy get caffeinated—but with stern guardrails. Effective November 25, 2025, Health Canada authorized both synthetic and natural caffeine in hard, soft, and semi-soft candies (Category 6 supplements), capping doses at 56 mg per serving (or 100 mg for “high-caffeine” versions).
But here’s the catch: any product exceeding 56 mg/serving must carry bold warnings:
- “Do not consume with other caffeine sources on the same day”
- “Not recommended for children under 14, pregnant/nursing women, or caffeine-sensitive individuals”
- If over 79 mg, add: “Maximum X servings per day” (based on 400 mg total limit)
Labels must display “Contains Caffeine” in minimum font sizes and group all cautions under a “Supplement Facts” banner. Full compliance is required by January 1, 2028. The message is clear: enjoy your buzz—but know your limits.
