The research and development of new materials urgently needs to find the right direction, determine the key points, promote research and development and industrialization, and provide material support for emerging industries and cutting-edge fields.
At the 2021 China New Chemical Material Industry Development Strategy Seminar held recently, the participating experts expressed their opinions on the key development areas of new chemical materials.
Propose a route and actively carry out research layout
Regarding the current problems in my country’s new materials, Li Shousheng, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, believes that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the new chemical materials industry should focus on aerospace, electronic information, new energy, etc. The industry’s demand for high-end new chemical materials is to give priority to products that are urgently needed for industrial safety, have a good research and development foundation, and have a large market potential as the focus of research.
Select a batch of key chemical new material products with large demand, wide application, and good technical foundation to solve the problems of performance improvement and high cost. In response to the requirements of downstream industries for product performance, strengthen applied research and development, enhance specialized, batch, and customized service capabilities, and promote the coordinated development of upstream and downstream industry chains. At the same time, follow the development trend of global petroleum and chemical industry technology, give full play to the strength of universities and scientific research institutes, and actively carry out the research layout of cutting-edge materials.
Zhao Jungui, vice chairman and secretary-general of the Petrochemical Federation, also proposed that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the new chemical material industry should focus on breakthroughs in a number of major key technologies and equipment to achieve applications in high-end areas; make up for the shortcomings of the industry and cultivate lean Manufacturing capabilities, and strive to achieve serialization, high performance and sustainable green development of new chemical materials.
Give advice and clarify the direction of future development
In recent years, relevant state departments have successively issued policy documents such as "Made in China 2025", "Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Innovative Development of New Materials Industry" and "New Materials Industry Development Guide", emphasizing the strategic position of the new materials industry.
A number of policies issued by the state have also clearly pointed out the key directions for the development of the new material industry. For example, the chemical raw materials and chemical product manufacturing industries highlighted in the "Catalogue of Industries Encouraging Foreign Investment (2019 Edition)", including functional polyester (PET), polyoxymethylene, polyphenylene sulfide, polyether ether ketone, polyimide Amine etc.
The "Three-year Action Plan to Enhance the Core Competitiveness of Manufacturing Industry (2018-2020)" listed new biodegradable plastics as the focus in the key technology industrialization project of new chemical materials. "The 13th Five-Year Development Planning Guide for the Petroleum and Chemical Industry" lists polymer materials as a strategic emerging industry as a priority area for development. The China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation issued the "14th Five-Year" chemical new material industry development key work guidance that emphasizes the development of high-performance projects such as core copper clad laminate resin materials (LCP, PI, epoxy resin, etc.) for 5G communication base stations plastic.
Xu Jian, an expert from the National Committee of Experts in the Field of New Materials and a distinguished professor at Shenzhen University, said that in the next few years, the global representative product market for new materials may be occupied by carbon fiber composite materials, permanent magnet materials, thermoplastic elastomers, photonic crystals, and metal aviation materials.
Zhang Shouhai from the Institute of Polymer Materials, Dalian University of Technology suggested focusing on the development of high-performance polymer materials and their composite materials, special functional polymer materials, high-performance and functional general-purpose polymer materials, bio-based polymer materials, and recyclable recycling Use of polymer materials, etc.
Seize the opportunity to lay out the high-end new material industry
Xu Jian believes that the "14th Five-Year Plan" new material technology research and development and application will lock in key areas such as carbon fiber and its composite materials, high-temperature alloy materials, special alloy materials, third-generation semiconductor materials, new display materials and rare earth functional materials.
Xu Jian introduced the development of key areas of my country's new materials, of which special attention should be paid to the fact that engineering plastics have been listed as the focus of advanced basic materials in the "New Material Industry Development Guide". "In terms of engineering plastics, taking polyphenylene ether as an example, due to the poor fluidity and processability of pure PPO resin, the PPO materials used on the market are usually modified by physical or chemical methods.
Modified PPO is a base resin for the neck of high-frequency and high-speed substrates for 5G. It is widely used in communication base stations, automotive electronics, servers, mobile terminals and other fields. Today's 5G construction speed will inevitably promote high-frequency and high-speed substrates into the fast lane of development . Not only that, modified PPO is also a key resin for the preparation of high-frequency and high-speed substrates. When combined with other resins, fillers, and glass fiber cloth, a board with high heat resistance, high dimensional stability, and excellent dielectric properties can be obtained. "Xu Jian said.

In particular, general polymer materials are basically domestically produced. Some technologies have reached the world's advanced level, and some have reached the world's leading level, but many of them There is overcapacity, and there is a big gap between high-performance polymer materials and functional polymer materials and the world level."
Taking the field of high-performance polymer materials as an example, high-performance engineering plastics are important materials for the development of high-tech and national defense industries. "Because the heat resistance and solubility of high-performance engineering plastics change in the opposite direction, the higher the heat-resistant temperature, the worse the solubility, or even insoluble. This makes it difficult to synthesize and costly, and the processing method can only rely on thermoforming. , The application field is limited. Therefore, the scientific and industrial circles are very concerned about the development of new high-temperature-resistant and soluble varieties, hoping to achieve high performance, low cost, and controllable equipment." Zhang Shouhai said.
