Get to know about how does guaiacol work

ECHEMI 2022-03-09

How does guaiacol work is a question many people have. Guaiacol is a molecule that has the ability to inhibit what is known as beta-glucosidase enzyme. This enzyme stops the body from digesting carbohydrates and instead produces glycolysis, which ignores its usual regulation by insulin. The result of this is a spike in blood sugar levels, especially after eating foods high in carbs like rice or potatoes that would be normally digested by beta-glucosidase enzymes.

 How does guaiacol work

1.How does guaiacol work is a question many people have. Guaiacol is a molecule that has the ability to inhibit what is known as beta-glucosidase enzyme. 2.In the liver, insulin (a fat storing hormone) causes glucose (the stuff in our blood) to be stored into glycogen stores inside cells. But guaiacol causes the beta-glucosidase enzymes to be less active, which then causes insulin to be less active. It is like the two molecules are fighting to control the insulin. Normally if there is insulin then glucose will be stored into glycogen but with guaiacol it cheats its way out.

3.Any carbohydrate that you eat is handled by insulin. Normally you should have a spike in insulin after eating a meal, but if there is guaiacol in the body then the beta-glucosidase enzymes will be less responsive to insulin causing an abnormal spike in glucose.

4.The end result from this is diabetes mellitus type 2 which can cause damage to kidneys and eyesight and possibly death. The ability of guaiacol to inhibit beta glucosidase can lead to uncontrolled blood sugar levels, which may cause serious consequences like high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, blindness and even kidney failure.

Where to get guaiacol

1.Guaiacol is found in many plants containing the guaiacyl group. The main sources are barley and apples, but there are other plants that contain guaiacol as well.

5.In a healthy person, the liver will clear guaiacol from the body naturally. But in diabetes mellitus, the liver simply cannot do its job and this causes serious damage to the kidneys and eyesight.

6.Guaiacol has also been connected to several cancers including liver cancer and breast cancer and prostate cancer. This is possible because when there is too much guaiacol in the body then it can cause an increase in DNA synthesis leading to genetic mutations which may lead to cancers.

What happens if I take too much

3.Acute guaiacol poisoning causes severe and sometimes deadly effects on the body. This explains how does guaiacol work. This poisoning may be caused by drinking a medium-proof alcohol (like whiskey) with guaiacol in it and then tasting the drink immediately. The effects of acute intoxication include vomiting, sweating, blurred vision and other symptoms of intoxication.
