Types of Catalysts and how they work

Iron has long been the standard catalyst for ammonia synthesis. Nitrogen and hydrogen gases can be passed over four beds of catalytic material at a speed of almost 97% to convert them into ammonia using the Haber process.

Palladium chloride is a homogeneous catalyst that is often used to synthesise organic compounds in industry. It speeds up carbon monoxide oxidation with hydrogen by converting carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. It is used to oxidize hydrocarbons into alcohol or formic acid into acetic acid.

Vanadium oxide is a heterogeneous catalyst that can speed up methane oxidation into carbon dioxide and water without poisoning it at high temperatures such as 300 degrees Celsius. It was discovered in 1831 by Andrés Manuel del Río, a Spaniard who found it when he reduced vanadium oxide to metallic vanadium. Vanadium oxide is used in industry.

Nickel chloride is a catalyst used to produce hydrogen chloride by oxidizing hydrochloric acid. This is done by passing chlorine gas over nickel at 450 degrees Celsius to yield hydrogen chloride and nickel oxychloride.

Platinum and Alumina are heterogeneous catalysts usually used to produce aluminium metal from bauxite. It reduces alumina, which is an oxide of aluminium, into the molten metal at 900 degrees Celsius in potassium aluminothermic reduction. Platinum acts as a catalyst by creating a passageway for electrons through the fluoride ions in alumina and allowing them to break their bonds and form aluminium molecules that can escape.

Titanium is an everyday use in the industry. It has many vital uses such as superalloys, heat treating and corrosion-resistant applications for petroleum refineries, petrochemical processing, power generation and desalination plants. It is also used with nickel and chromium in the production of titanium dioxide in paints, plastics, rubber and paper.
