Sodium hydroxide also plays a role in the bleaching process for fabrics, where it acts as an oxidizing agent. It can then be used again to neutralize excess chlorine after bleaching.
Before caustic soda can be used to treat textiles, it must first be dissolved in water. It is then sprayed onto the fabric, which is still moist; the caustic solution chemically changes some of the components that make up the fabric.
Mercerising Method with Caustic Soda
This process is also called mercerizing, and it is used to increase the strength of a fabric. After being moistened with caustic soda, the textiles are treated with sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate, which change some of their chemical components. The alkali component in these substances opens up the fibers' protein structures; this enables them to absorb dyes more readily and gives them a lustrous appearance.

Caustic soda is a powerful disinfectant and antiseptic substance widely used in the form of soaps and detergents. It is also used in many manufacturing processes, e.g., making pulp, paper, etc. It is widely known as lye or caustic soda, one of the strongest bases available today. It can be used as a drain opener because it breaks down grease and oils very effectively, which causes a lot of damage to the body tissues.
Other uses of caustic soda include water treatment, paper recycling, chemical manufacture. Uses in water treatment include coagulating organic matter, removing excess chlorine, and neutralizing acidic water. It can be used in many different forms, e.g., liquid, powder, or flakes, stored in closed containers to avoid contact with skin.
Caustic Soda Use in Pulp & Paper Mills
As a pH regulator, sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) is widely used in pulp & paper mills. It is added to control the pH levels of dyes, bleaches, and other chemicals used to treat the pulp. It has many uses in the textile industry, as discussed above.

Lignin helps hold together many other compounds present in cellulose, so its removal makes it easier for papermakers to extract pure cellulose fibers.
