As the main protein component of human plasma, human albumin has a life-saving role in resuscitation and treatment of critically ill patients. As the industry has high policy and technical barriers, and is affected by the scarcity of domestic plasma resources and the extraction and purification process, the huge domestic albumin market is still largely dependent on imports.

According to PDB's domestic sample hospital market data, the species with the highest sales amount in 2021 was human albumin, with annual sales of 4.944 billion yuan, up 17.06% year-on-year from previous years. The clinical demand for albumin is growing steadily, and with its own consumer attributes, the human albumin market is expected to maintain a growth rate of around 14% under the trend of aging.

  1. Albumin accounts for 52%-56% of total plasma protein

Human albumin is a sterile, non-pyrogenic serum albumin made from healthy human plasma that has been extracted and purified and inactivated by germs.

As it is mainly secreted and synthesised by the liver, human albumin is used clinically for the treatment of oedema or ascites caused by liver cirrhosis and kidney disease, hypoproteinaemia and neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. In addition, albumin is also used in rescue and critical care patients.

Albumin accounts for 52%-56% of total plasma protein in healthy people, with a concentration of 38-48g/L. Its main function is to maintain normal plasma colloid osmotic pressure (70%-80% of total plasma colloid osmotic pressure), and intravenous infusion of this product can promote the entry of intertissue fluid into the blood vessels.

Albumin binds anions as well as cations and can transport different substances as well as toxic substances to detoxification organs. Albumin also provides the body with a large reserve of amino acids; 50 ml of 20% human albumin is equivalent to 400 ml of whole blood for this function.

According to the results of a prescription survey at Beijing Tongren Hospital, from January to June 2016, 839 people in 31 clinical departments used human albumin, with general surgery leading the number of users, accounting for 20.26% of the total, followed by cardiology, thoracic surgery, stem protection and paediatric wards, mainly for the prevention and treatment of hypoproteinemia (59.50%), cardiopulmonary bypass, burns, haemodialysis (9.00%), oedema and ascites due to liver cirrhosis and kidney disease (4.50%), etc.

Hypoalbuminemia is not an isolated disease, but rather a result of very low protein levels in the body's blood due to various causes. Hypoproteinemia is therefore one of the common clinical conditions, and the causes include hepatogenic, nephrogenic, tuberculous and neoplastic.

Patients with this disease have reduced vascular colloid osmotic pressure and develop multiple plasma cavity effusions, which can cause oedema in multiple areas of the body.

In 2009, human albumin was included in the medical insurance catalogue, limited to salvage and work injury insurance, with fewer indications and a small range of use.

In the 2017 edition of the medical insurance drug catalogue, the scope of use of albumin for medical insurance has been further expanded, and the market potential has been gradually explored, with the demand for the product increasing year after year.
