Autoliv to Consolidate Four Operations into Single Site

Plastics News 2017-06-28

Swedish auto supplier Autoliv ASP Inc. plans to invest $22.6 million to consolidate four Michigan operations into one location in Southfield, Mich.

The consolidation is an effort to house the entire electronics operations of the auto supplier under one roof, while also allowing for hiring growth. The project is expected to result in 384 new engineering jobs, which are supported by a $2.6 million performance-based grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund.

Autoliv ASP, the North American subsidiary of Stockholm-based Autoliv Inc., will lease a newly constructed 180,000-square-foot facility in Southfield to accommodate the consolidation, according to a news release from the Michigan Economic Development Corp.

The company will vacate four leased properties in the Detroit suburbs, two in Farmington Hills and two in Southfield. The new facility will be located adjacent to its current North American electronics hub in Southfield. The building will eventually house more than 1,500, said Tom Hajkus, communications manager for Autoliv in the Americas.

Autoliv ASP's electronics division develops and manufacturers automotive safety systems, such as radar, night vision and camera vision systems.

The company uses plastics in passive auto safety products such as air bags, seat belts and steering wheels, and for housings for electronic systems.
