At the time, it was thought that phosphorus was an organic substance, and so the German chemist Johann Becher (1635-1682) set about extracting it from bone ash.

 

He heated bone ash in a mixture of potash and nitre (saltpetre), which caused three substances to come out of the mixture: phosphorus, a waxy substance called glycerol, and phosphoric acid. Glycerol and phosphorus are organic substances, but phosphoric acid turned out to be a mineral. The circumstances of its discovery were completely by chance. It was later found that the acids contained in living things were very similar to phosphoric acid, and this gave support to the idea that phosphorus was not an organic substance after all.
