Comprehensive Knowledge of Phospholipid

ECHEMI 2022-04-20

What Is a Phospholipid?

Phospholipid, refers to lipids containing phosphoric acid and belongs to complex lipids. Phospholipids are the main components of biological membranes.

Phospholipids are amphiphilic molecules with a hydrophilic nitrogen- or phosphorus-containing head at one end and a long hydrophobic (lipophilic) hydrocarbon-based chain at the other. For this reason, the hydrophilic ends of phospholipid molecules are close to each other, and the hydrophobic ends are close to each other, and often together with other molecules such as proteins, glycolipids, and cholesterol, form a phospholipid bilayer, that is, the structure of the cell membrane.

Phospholipid Structure in Cell Membrane Structure

The way to affect the structure and function of cell membranes, cell walls and organelles: acting on the hydrophobic hydroxyl groups in the phospholipid bilayer structure of cell membranes, changing cell membrane structure, function and permeability, accelerating the leakage of intracellular substances, disrupting proton motive force and electron influx, and finally Destroy cell integrity.

Phospholipid Examples

1Ceramide

Ceramide, is a type of phospholipid with ceramide as the backbone. It is the most important and the highest proportion of the lipids between the stratum corneum cells of the skin, and it has a strong ability to associate Water molecules.

2Soy lecithin

Soy lecithin, also known as soybean lecithin or phospholipid, is a light yellow or brown transparent, translucent viscous substance. It is a by-product of soybean oil production and a natural surfactant. Its main components are lecithin, cephalin and inositol phospholipids.

Phospholipid Function

√ As a kind of Functional food additives

Functional foods refer to foods with certain health-care functions, and additives such as oligosaccharides, sugar alcohols, phospholipids, and anti-radical substances are commonly used. With the gradual improvement of consumers' health awareness, Chinese consumers' demand for functional foods is growing rapidly.

 As an emulsifier

As one of the most common phospholipids, soybean lecithin has excellent emulsification, anti-oxidation, dispersibility and moisturizing properties, and has been widely used in food, instant milk, margarine, granular beverages, and nutritional emulsifiers.

 Load drugs

Lipid nanobubbles are drug carriers with inert gas as the core and phospholipids as the shell, which can be loaded with drugs through electrostatic adsorption, encapsulation in the bubble and non-covalent binding of biotin-avidin. Among them, the drug loading mode wrapped in the bubble is relatively stable, and the drug loading and the encapsulation rate are relatively high.

You have already read a lot about phospholipid, but where can you get the product? ECHEMI has phospholipid suppliers distributed worldwide, here are two excellent ones:
