How to Affirm or Deny That Is Phosphoric Acid Strong

ECHEMI 2022-04-22

To know that is phosphoric acid strong, it is necessary to know certain data, first, what is phosphoric acid, as well as the characteristics it has, such as the capacity of dissociation in aqueous solutions, and in which this chemical compound is used.

What is phosphoric acid?

This acid is a chemical compound, formed by hydrogen, phosphorus, and oxygen, which is considered within the compounds constituted by molecules that are formed by 1 atom of phosphorus that is in the middle of 4 atoms of oxygen, and the value of the negative charge is 3, has the peculiarity that when measuring the phosphate that form, the 5 atoms that form the molecule are included.

Phosphoric acid, having oxygen, hydrogen and some other chemical element, in this case phosphorus, in the formation of the molecules, this acid is included in the oxacids.

Characteristics and properties of phosphoric acid

The phosphoric acid is also known as orthophosphoric acid, it is presented in the form of a solid, colorless, odorless, also as a thick liquid, and transparent appearance, this acid is among the components of many organic compounds, these include vital acids in the human body such as deoxyribonucleic acid, ribonucleic acid, and adenosine triphosphate, in phospholipids, in sugars, and is present in blood plasma.

As part of orthophosphates, the form in which it occurs in nature is that of apatite, and as part of human bodies, it is found as a fundamental component in bones, and teeth of human and animal bodies.

The chemical formula of phosphoric acid is HPO, which means that each molecule of the acid is composed of 3 atoms of hydrogen H, 1 atom of phosphorus P, and 4 atoms of oxygen O.

To determine that it is phosphoric acid strong or weak acid, other properties must be known, such as the density, which in this acid is 1.88 grams per cubic centimeter, the relative vapor density in air with value of 1 is 3.4, the molar mass is 97.99 grams per mole, the melting point is 42.35 degrees Celsius, the vapor pressure is 4 Pa when at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, the solubility of this acid in water is very high, and it has the property of absorbing moisture from the medium in which it is found and from the air.

Is phosphoric acid strong?

The acids that are considered as strong, meet certain characteristics, these can be checked by measurements such as pH, however there are others by which you can determine the strength of the acid without measuring the pH, but by observation, such as electronegativity, while this parameter is higher, the greater the strength of the acid, by the atomic radius, if the ionic radius increases, decreases the acidity, and by the charge, while the positive charge is greater, the compound will be more acidic.

An acid known as strong is in a list of very few members, this list does not exceed 7 acids, among them are hydrobromic acid HBr, chloric acid HClO3, hydrochloric acid HCl, nitric acid HNO3, perchloric acid HClO4, sulfuric acid H2SO4, and hydroiodic acid HI, and are characterized by complete dissociation in solutions at constant pressures, and temperatures, releasing a proton H positivo.

The statement that it is phosphoric acid strong is an error, since this acid does not meet the characteristics required to be an acid strong.

Although this acid is considered triprotic, because it has the capacity to dissociate in water up to three times, it cannot be said that it is phosphoric acid strong, and according to chemical classifications it is among the weak acids, and this is due to the fact that in spite of dissociating in water, a number of the acid molecules maintain the original composition.

This acid is used in the protection of metals, to prevent the effects of corrosion, in agriculture it is used to manufacture fertilizers, where it is used as an acidicant in mixtures for fertilizers, and pesticides, it is to provide sufficient phosphorus to crops in alkaline soils.

In the chemical industry it is used to manufacture various types of detergents, in the food industry it is used in the manufacture of soft drinks, sodas, as an antioxidant agent, and in the manufacture of processed cheeses, it is also used in dentistry as dental enamel, and in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, in activated carbon, in ceramics, and it is also used to manufacture faucets providing the desired shine to aluminum.
