Competition For Fresh Food E-Commerce Platforms Fierce

ECHEMI 2022-04-11

Competition in the fresh food e-commerce business is becoming increasingly fierce. The new fresh food retail industry has grown rapidly in recent years, but after rapid offline expansion, capital entry and massive subsidies to "burn money", the industry is still facing the problem of how to make a profit. With many rounds of reshuffling, there are more and more models on the fresh food circuit, but what consumers value most is price, product freshness and delivery speed. In Guangzhou, for example, the delivery time varies greatly from platform to platform, with some taking as little as 13 minutes from order to receipt, and some taking as much as 56 minutes. As for delivery costs, if not for new customers, first order offers, members, etc., the amount of orders that do not reach the platform's free shipping threshold are subject to shipping charges, with mainstream App shipping costs ranging from 3-6 RMB.

Big differences from platform to platform

The author placed orders for vegetables on BoxMall, Meituan Buy, Dingdong Buy and the Park Park App. In terms of vegetable category selection, I chose the more common small cabbage. When I searched for Chinese cabbage on the BoxMart, Meituan Buy and Dingdong Buy apps respectively, the products were all displayed. According to the page, the price of the three apps is 3.99 yuan per serving of baby bok choy, with each serving weighing about 300 grams.

During the order period at noon on the same day, I searched for "baby bok choy" on the Park App, but the page only showed products such as baby bok choy seedlings, Yunnan Shanghai green and Shanghai green seedlings, while organic baby bok choy showed "arriving soon"; cabbage boy also showed The results only show organic cabbage as "coming soon" and cabbage boy as "arriving tomorrow night". In the end, I placed an order for 3.99 RMB/serving (about 300g) of baby bok choy on the above three apps that had baby bok choy. On Park, similar baby bok choy was not available.

From the time the order was successfully paid for to the time the courier boy delivered it to my home, the test found that it took 13 minutes for Meituan to buy the food; 40 minutes for Boxma; 56 minutes for Dingdong to deliver the food to my home; and 53 minutes for Park to deliver it. The time I placed my order that day was between 11.30am and 12pm, with some platforms showing that it belonged to the delivery peak. Although the delivery times varied between the platforms, they were all delivered within the estimated delivery times shown on their app pages.

I bought 3.99 yuan/serving of baby bok choy and 7.99 yuan/serving of milk bok choy seedlings respectively, how did the delivery fees from the above platforms work out?

The Dingdong Buy Vegetable App waived the 5 yuan delivery fee. The Meituan Buy Vegetable page shows a $3 delivery fee, but the order is free of delivery fees due to a discount. The Park shows that there is a new user coupon offsetting the 3 RMB delivery fee and the delivery is free. Boxing is free of charge because the order does not reach the "free 6 RMB delivery fee for orders over 39 RMB" and requires 6 RMB for delivery.

According to the Dingdong buy grocery App, the current address order is less than 28 yuan, need to charge 5 yuan delivery fee, each user has 1 time free delivery fee, etc.. When I placed another order for the same product, the page already showed that there was a 5 yuan delivery fee. Similarly, Meituan buy food on delivery fees have provisions, the order amount of goods less than 15 yuan orders, charged 3 yuan delivery fee; order amount greater than or equal to 15 yuan orders, free shipping. When I placed another order for 3.99 yuan/serving of baby bok choy, Meituan Buy Vegetable wanted to charge 3 yuan delivery fee. On Park, the delivery fee is waived for orders over 19 yuan, and 3 yuan/single delivery fee is charged for orders under 19 yuan.
