WHO Clarifies That One Dose Of Hpv Vaccine Is Enough Jiffy Biologicals Plunges

ECHEMI 2022-04-15

A few days ago, the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) met to review the evidence on 1-dose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and concluded that a single dose of HPV vaccine can provide reliable protection, comparable to the effect of a 2-dose or 3-dose vaccination regimen.

On April 14, the HPV vaccine concept stocks took a big dive in share prices as a result of this. Jiffy Biologicals fell over 15%, Wantai Biologicals fell 10.00%, and Watson Biologicals, Kangtai Biologicals, Kangxino, etc. followed the fall.

As of press time, Jiffy Biologicals reported 112.99 yuan/share, down 16.42%, with a total market value of 180.8 billion yuan; Wantai Biologicals reported 256.04 yuan/share, down 10.00%, with a total market value of 155.4 billion yuan.

However, SAGE's current new recommendations are based on concerns about the slow introduction of the HPV vaccine into immunisation programmes and low overall population coverage, particularly in poorer countries.

WHO said that globally, the use of the life-saving vaccine has been slow, with coverage in some countries well below the 90% target and global coverage of only 13% for the three-dose vaccine by 2020. the slow pace of HPV vaccination and low coverage are also constrained by a number of factors such as lack of supply and the high cost of vaccination.

Some HPV vaccine manufacturers said in a media interview that the WHO's recommendation is meant to address the huge gap between the supply of HPV vaccine and the demand for it, but this recommendation does not yet have legal force and is not consistent with the vaccination instructions already on the market, which have legal force.

In the future, whether the WHO recommendation can actually be implemented will still be a game of chance with the relevant HPV vaccine manufacturers.
