China has maintained an upward trend for the fourth consecutive year, ranking 14th, three times higher than last year, according to the Global Innovation Index (GII) released in New Delhi on May 24, 2019.

According to the newly released index, the top ten are Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark, Singapore, Germany and Israel. China ranked 14th, up 3 places from 17th last year. India ranked 52nd, up 5 places from 57th last year, the highest in South Asia.

The result of China's rising ranking confirms the prediction made by Francis Gao Rui, Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization. Gao Rui said in a recent interview in Geneva that he was very optimistic about China's ranking in the global innovation index in 2019, because China has been incorporating innovation into its economic development strategy and direction for many years and has established a "first-class intellectual property infrastructure" in the past 40 years.

Global Innovation Index (GII) has been issued annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Cornell University (Cornell University) and International Business School (IBS) since 2007. It shows the changes of innovation capability in different countries through quantitative indicators.
