Covestro Partners With SmartGuard Rx Inc., Polycarbonate Material For Anti-snoring Products
Covestro announced a partnership with SmartGuard Rx Inc. to provide the latest formulation of its SmartGuard anti-snoring product, designed to relieve snoring. SmartGuard chose Covestro's Makrolon 2858 polycarbonate resin, which combines strength and biocompatibility.
Covestro's range of biocompatible medical-grade products are used in a wide variety of applications ranging from venous access components to surgical instruments to drug delivery solutions.
SmartGuard Rx Inc. was co-founded in 2010 by dentists Dr. David Spainhower and Brian Larsen to market their patented mouthguard to reduce nighttime grinding. They recently developed an anti-snoring device and needed a material that was strong enough to withstand the enormous pressure exerted by grinding teeth (up to 10 times the force of chewing) without failing. Makrolon 2858 polycarbonate meets this requirement in all respects.
Dr David Spainhower said: "From a very young age, I have been affected by clenching and grinding, including temporomandibular joint pain. This experience led me to design a night guard as well as an anti-snoring device that not only Very effective for patients and affordable for anyone looking for relief. Covestro had enough care and expertise to join me in finding polycarbonate blends to meet all of my unique and rigorous needs."
Mark Nichols, Key Account Manager Healthcare at Covestro, said: "Our materials are improving the quality of life for many people who suffer from involuntary teeth grinding and snoring. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing our materials positively impact people's lives. Right. With Makrolon 2858 polycarbonate from Covestro, we were able to create a robust material to meet the needs of the SmartGuard design.”
