ECHEMI 2022-05-09

Recently, Corning Incorporated announced that the Corning Reactor Technology (AFR) team has partnered with India's leading pharmaceutical company, Sun Pharma, to achieve the successful operation of the G4 silicon carbide reactor at the latter's API manufacturing facility in Toansa.

According to reports, the Corning G4 silicon carbide reactor system is specially designed for continuous flow industrial production and has excellent mass transfer and heat transfer characteristics. Corning's patented cardioid microchannel design ensures seamless scale-up for industrial production.

Chemicals produced at the Sun Pharma plant using the G4 silicon carbide reactor are key ingredients used in the production of several pharmaceutical products worldwide. Using the G4 SiC reactor enables Sun Pharma to perform multi-step chemical synthesis in a single reactor, handling flammable and hazardous chemicals with a more intrinsically safe technology, avoiding the use of cryogenic low temperature reactions, resulting in significant energy savings.

Alessandra Vizza, Business Director, India, said, "We are honored to partner with one of the leaders in the pharmaceutical field to help it produce high-quality medicines for customers around the world. We are delighted to be working with them to develop intrinsically safer API manufacturing technologies, Improve quality and efficiency.”

Sudhir Pillai, President of Corning India, said: "India is one of the largest pharmaceutical producers in the world and it is critical to ensure domestic supply chains for critical raw materials for pharmaceuticals. Given the broad applicability of Corning's reactors, we believe our technology will continue to be used in play a key role in the future of pharmaceutical and fine chemical production."
