Is There Water On The Moon
Have you ever considered that is there water on the moon? Unlike the Earth, the Moon itself has no global magnetic field and is not protected by a dense atmosphere; its surface is directly exposed to extreme temperatures and the harsh vacuum of space. In addition, the average temperature of the lunar surface can drop from about 100 degrees Celsius during the day to about -150 degrees Celsius at night, making it impossible for liquid water to exist stably. However, with the deepening of observational research, scientists found that some impact craters in the lunar polar region at the bottom of the permanent shadow area, year-round exposure to sunlight, the temperature is extremely low, in the vacuum conditions, water ice may be stable existence.
In the 1990s, scientists discovered anomalies in the radar echoes from the Clementine probe in the permanently shadowed area of the Moon's south pole, and the neutron spectrometer on NASA's Lunar Prospector probe showed large amounts of hydrogen in the permanently shadowed area of the Moon.
Some experiments have demonstrated is there water on the moon.The dimly lit permanently shadowed region has gathered attention in the search for lunar water. Scientists hope to find evidence of the existence of lunar water in the permanently shadowed region of the Moon.
In 2010, a U.S. satellite impacted the moon's permanently shadowed region and found a large amount of water ice in the spattered dust, confirming the existence of lunar water. 2020, NASA confirmed the existence of water on the moon's surface through telescopic observations for the first time; in January 2022, China's Chang'e 5 lunar lander obtained in-situ lunar surface exploration data for the first time, and the existence of water on the moon has since been "on-site evidence".
Nowadays, scientists have found that lunar water exists mainly in 3 forms through various research means such as lunar remote sensing detection, analysis of returned lunar samples and impact experiments: water ice in the permanently shadowed areas of the poles, magmatic genesis water from the lunar interior in some regions, and surface water in the form of hydroxyl or water molecules all over the Moon.
So, is there water on the moon? Scientists believe that there are two possible sources of lunar water, namely from the interior and the exterior of the Moon. Specifically, lunar water could come from magma inside the Moon or from external solar wind bombardment, impacts of comets, meteoroids and micrometeoroids, etc.
Regarding lunar magma water, scientists have previously found magma water when analyzing Apollo lunar samples, but at that time scientists always thought that the samples were "contaminated" by the Earth. In August 2013, researchers at Johns Hopkins University used the Lunar Mineral Mapper carried on the Indian "Moonship I" probe to image and analyze the Briole crater located near the Moon's equator and found that the central peak of Briole crater contains a large amount of hydrogen oxide. Researchers believe this is direct evidence that Briole Crater contains deep lunar magmatic water, suggesting the possibility that water existed on the Moon at the time of its formation.
In 2011, scientists analyzed rock specimens from the lunar surface brought back by the Apollo spacecraft. They focused on measuring the hydrogen isotopic composition of a mineral called apatite in the specimens and found that the composition was close to the hydrogen isotopic composition of the three known comets. This led the researchers to conclude that comets are one of the main sources of water on the Moon.
However, the infrared spectroscopy data of the Moon indicate that water is present on the entire surface of the Moon and that the Moon has higher water content in the morning and at night when the temperature is lower, and lower water content in the midday when the temperature is higher. In contrast, magmatic water from the lunar interior, as well as water from comets and meteoroids, is more scattered on the lunar surface and does not fully explain the presence of water on the entire lunar surface and the diurnal variation of water characteristics, etc.
Therefore, the current mainstream theory suggests that the solar wind from the Sun contains positively charged hydrogen ions that continuously bombard the lunar surface and combine with oxygen atoms in the lunar surface material to produce hydroxyl or water molecules distributed over the whole Moon. This theory can well explain phenomena such as the daily variation of lunar water that has been confirmed by observations, as well as by the hydrogen isotope analysis of Apollo lunar samples and hydrogen ion bombardment experiments.
Scientists believe that the water generated by the solar wind "evaporates" under the heating of solar light, and some of it migrates and settles in the permanent shadow zone at the poles, where the temperature is extremely low, and a large amount of water ice is stored at the poles over a long geological period.
Therefore, the solar wind is considered to be one of the main sources of water on the Moon.
