Recently, Wacker, a German chemical group, officially put into operation its fumed silica production plant in Charleston, Tennessee. The annual capacity of the plant is 13000 tons. The products are not only for export, but also for wacker's own silicone production. The total investment in the new plant is about $150 million, creating 50 new jobs in the Charleston production base. Up to now, Wacker has produced highly dispersed fumed silica in the production bases of berghausen and nunritz in Germany and Zhangjiagang in China. The completion of the new production plant has also enabled Charleston production base to realize the recycling of materials and further improve the value chain. Wacker has been producing polysilicon for the solar industry at its Charleston production base since 2016. The most important by-product of polysilicon production is silicon tetrachloride. After transformation, the substance can be recycled in production or further processed into more valuable h-fumed silica.
