What is silicate used for is a question that is asked by many people. Silicate is a compound that consists of silicon and oxygen atoms with varying numbers of hydroxyl groups attached to it. As an element which is found naturally in sandstone, it plays an important role in water filtration processes with the properties that allow it to remove heavy metals like lead from a water stream or soil solution as well as other compounds due to its affinity for hydrogen ions dissolved within water molecules. 1.Water softener
Silicate is an important component of water softening agent due to its affinity for sodium ion. In water softening, sodium ions are being replaced by hydrogen ions which are considered to be caustic in nature. Silicate is used to remove these caustic properties from the water and convert it into a substance that is not harmful for human consumption. An alternative method of using silicate to soften water is that it can be dissolved in acidic solutions using hydrochloric acid or any other acids capable of reacting with silicate ions and form insoluble compounds like ferrous silicate which will precipitate out of solution.
2.Sulphuric acid
Silicate is used as a replacement for sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium borate when it comes to the production of sulphuric acid. It is used in the form of Sodium Silicate to replace these substances because it is nontoxic and has fewer byproducts while maintaining the properties of these compounds such as strength, hardness and pH. It has also been recognized that silicate performs better than sodium carbonate regarding lime scale control in water softeners. In this process, it is more recommended that it be paired with Grains per gallon and using a dosage rate of 12% which would result in a 5% increase in overall performance.
3.Baking soda
Baking soda is known to be used as an alternative to sodium silicate in the production of glass. It is also used in the production of paper and textile industries in order to produce strong pulp. Silicate is very important in this process due to its ability to react with calcium and magnesium ions that are abundant in these materials so as to form limestone which would give those products the properties that they need for consumption.
4.Potash (potassium silicate)
Silicate is one of the major elements that are present in potash which means it plays a significant role when it comes to producing potassium sulphate from potash during the extraction process. This process is known as leaching. Firstly, potash is leached with sulphuric acid which results in the formation of liquid that contains the sulphate ions and silicate ions depending on the amount of potash and acid used. Then it is leached with ammonia, which dissolves the silicate and forms potassium sulphate. This answer the question what is silicate used for?
5.Borax (sodium borate)
Silicate is used in combination with sodium carbonate to produce sodium borate which is used in certain types of welding processes as well as production of thermosetting plastic products. It is important to indicate that sodium borate is the most important raw material in the production of thermosetting plastics. The chemical process that is needed to produce this compound involves;
(a) By adding Borax with a base such as sodium hydroxide, a reaction takes place in which sodium hydroxide reacts with borax using heat so as to form sodium carbonate along with water. After a certain period of time, the solid slowly dissolves and forms a solution that contains silicate ions and borate ions.
(b) When the solution reaches a solid state, it needs to be dried out which can be achieved by heating it up to 400 degrees Celsius. Due to the presence of silicate ions and borate ions in this compound, it has properties that are suitable for certain welding operations. Borate is used in welding processes with aluminium alloys due to its ability to control aluminium oxides which form at high temperatures when aluminium reacts with oxygen.

It can be used in all of these processes due to its ability to contribute to the production of other compounds without being harmful for human consumption.
