Characteristics of fluorine element

1. Is diatomic

2. Is colorless, odorless and tasteless

This non-metallic element is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. However, the properties of fluorine elements can be detected by a special device. Fluorine has no odor even when it is burned. Fluorine gas is heavier than air and it will stay low instead of rising up right away (to escape). If there is fire or sources of heat nearby, it can instantly turn into a fatal weapon.

3. Has very low density.

This is another unique property of fluorine element, which is very low density. Fluorine gas is about 1.6 times lighter than air and it can easily escape from the environment. The lower density of fluorine gas makes it not as dangerous as other diatomic elements. This is the reason why fluorine element is one of the most dangerous and toxic elements in the world. If there is no safety measure people could be blown away by breathing fluorine gas.

4. Does not react easily with other elements or compounds

This property is a combination of two reasons. Fluorine element is completely non-metal, it's not a combustion product and has low density so it won't react with other elements or compounds in our environment naturally. Also, when fluorine element reacts with other elements or compounds, it will only break down into hydrogen fluoride (hydrogen) and fluorine (fluorine).

5. Has high conductivity

Fluorine has a higher conductivity for electricity than any other non-metallic element in the periodic table. It also has the highest thermal conductivity among non-metallic elements on earth. Fluorine is used in many industrial processes for instance in the manufacture of metal alloys, ceramics and plastics.

6. Does not occur naturally

It is naturally found only in compounds such as calcium fluoride and fluorite. Fluorine is completely non-metal, so it can't be found anywhere by itself. The only way to get fluorine element is by mining calcium fluoride or fluorite rocks combined with hydrofluoric acid (HF). HF can readily dissolve calcium fluoride and fluorite rocks, extracting small amounts of pure fluorine gas inside the solution.

Uses of Fluorine

1. Has a huge contribution to the health field.

Fluorine element can be used in many industries and applications, such as in dental products, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals. Fluorine is a strong base alternative to sodium hydroxide which is commonly used in teeth cleaning products. Fluoride ion has a high affinity with calcium carbonate minerals or hydroxyapatite and it helps strengthen the teeth enamel. It's also used to decrease the amount of acids in the denture chewing solution.

2. Can help in the prevention of cancer

Fluorine element is being researched for use against cancer. Fluoride element is present in about 90% of our bones and teeth, so it can be exploited for preventing cancer. According to the recent studies, fluoride ion can promote cell growth and reduce cell proliferation in many types of cancer cells. Fluoride also acts as a pro-drug, which means it increases the activity of enzymes that are needed for generating amino acids such as tryptophan and serotonin. Most people think that fluoride will lead to osteoporosis but this is not true. Fluoride is actually a bone-strengthening element.

3. Can be used in many industries in the manufacture of ceramics and glass-ceramics materials.

The first use of fluorine element was noted by a French chemist Edmond Frémy (1806 - 1877). He was the first to use fluorine and oxygen in ceramics production because they are very difficult to get. He did this by combining them with lime or magnesia and then added water to obtain various kinds of ceramic ware such as porcelain, glass, enamelware and bronze products.
