Volkswagen electric and chemical plant of the United States started construction
The plant's expansion also includes a 564000 square foot body shop on the same assembly line, where VW also plans to produce conventional fuel engines and electric vehicles based on MEB's electrified architecture. Volkswagen's U.S. subsidiary said Wednesday it will build a new plant near its Chattanooga base in Western Tennessee to assemble battery packs for its upcoming all electric vehicles. The plant is scheduled to start production in 2022, when it will become Volkswagen's electric vehicle assembly base in North America. The announcement was made at the groundbreaking ceremony of the $800 million expansion of the chattanou plant, attended by US executives of Volkswagen, Bill Lee, governor of Tennessee, Emily maber, German ambassador to the United States, as well as the head of the plant and production staff. It is reported that the expansion of the plant also includes a 564000 square foot body workshop. In the same assembly line, Volkswagen also plans to produce traditional fuel engines and electric vehicles based on MEB electric architecture.
At present, the factory produces large and medium-sized suvatlas and Passat cars, and will increase about 1000 jobs after expansion. According to VW's plan, they will start production of ID4 electric vehicles in Chattanooga in 2022, which is expected to be sold in the United States later in 2020, but the initial production will be carried out in Germany's zweikao plant. The batteries for the electric cars assembled in Chattanooga will come from a $1.7 billion new sk innovation plant in northeastern Atlanta, Georgia. "With the expansion of Volkswagen's market, Tennessee's production positioning will also be put at the forefront of electrification research and development. We hope that the employees here can quickly meet the challenges." Bill Lee, governor of Tennessee, said the government looks forward to continuous cooperation with the public to further promote the economic growth of advanced manufacturing industries in Chattanooga and other places. Tomdu Plessis, chief executive of Volkswagen's chattanou processing plant, said the recruitment for the new assembly plant would start in early 2020, and the new positions would include electrification research and development experts, as well as various automotive engineers covering software, machinery, manufacturing and chemistry fields. According to tomdu Plessis, the production of electric vehicles and vehicle batteries needs to be constantly updated. The underlying logic of the old traditional fuel vehicle era is no longer applicable to the current technology. In the United States, they are working with a large number of overseas colleagues and the Volkswagen academy to ensure that the team is fully prepared for the next transformation.
