Chemical used in boiler can be used for the heating process of a boiler. The boiler is used to generate steam that turns a turbine to produce electricity for power generation. 1.Coal Ash
Coal ash is a by-product of coal combustion. Coal ash contains inert elements such as silica, calcium, and alumina. Coal ash contains more than 95% moisture content. Most of these are non-polluting and can be used in industrial processes to make cement, plastic products and even as a raw material for making other metallic materials. In addition to that, there are less than 10% of poisonous metals which can cause serious illness if inhaled or ingested during handling. Since this is an inferior grade material that has not been screened through burning process, it is safe to use in the boiler.
2.Copper
Copper is a metal that is desirable in its elemental form. In the process of combustion, it can lose electrons and become cupric oxide which then combines with oxygen to release heat and form cupric chloride. This material is mostly used in the boiler as a contaminant control agent. It can absorb the hydrogen from flue gas to remove heavy metals. In addition to that, it also can be used as a non-corrosive catalyst for corrosion protection of equipment in boiler room.
3.Hydrazine
Hydrazine is chemically engineered rocket fuel first developed by the NASA due to its high combustion temperature, high stability and low toxicity. In the boiler, it is used to reduce corrosion of plant metals. It is also a product that is used in pipeline transport. Hydrazine can be used as a cleaning agent for fuel and pipe transport industries.
4.Nitrogen
Nitrogen is an inert gas that does not burn, but people may breathe the exhaust from combustion of nitrogen and noxious gases for long hours during the operation of a boiler. In addition to that, it can be used as an oxidizing agent in air and fuel systems to produce heat. Nitrogen gas can also be mixed with air pollution control device such as filters and scrubbers as a purge gas that discharges pollutants from the system before it enters into the atmosphere.
5.Manganese
Manganese is an additive that is used in steelmaking. It is also a component of water treatment chemicals. Manganese removes dissolved gaseous sulfur compounds and other undesirable materials from the boiler water. As a result, it improves the efficiency of boiler operation by preventing sludge formation and break down of organic complex.
6.Phosphate based chemicals
PHOSPHATE BASED CHEMICALS are an example of a chemical used in boiler to enhance the ability to dissolve air pollutants from fuel combustion process.. In addition to that, these phosphate-based chemicals have a low level toxicity . In addition to that, they are stable at high temperature conditions . These chemicals are the most commonly used chemical in boiler.
7.Zinc sulfate
Zinc sulfate is a raw material that is used in various industries including the manufacture of paper and paint. In addition to that, it is also used as an anti-corrosion agent for metal aftertreatment for boilers. It can protect hydrophobic surfaces from corrosion by reacting with hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds as well as act as a de-acidizer for acid generating gases from coal combustion process . It also can remove ammonia formed during the use of ammonia based fuels . In addition to that, it can absorb nitrogen oxide produced during combustion of fossil fuels .
8.Ammonia
Ammonia or NH3 is a colorless gas that has a strong odor. It is classed as an industrial toxic chemical but is not considered hazardous because of its low toxicity . In the boiler, ammonia is used to remove moisture from boiler water and to dissolve gaseous substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapors that can cause corrosion of metals.
9.Nitric acid
Nitric acid (HNO3) or nitrous acid (HNO2) is an inorganic chemical compound that can be produced by the action of nitric oxide with water. It is mainly used as a starting material in the production of fertilizers, explosives and dyes. The primary use of nitric acid in the boiler is to purify air by removing air pollutants such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. In addition to that, it can also be used as corrosion inhibitor in boiler metals .
10.Argon
Argon is a colorless gas with a very low boiling point similar to hydrogen. It has high thermal conductivity and softening point . In the boiler, it is used as a cleaning agent for fuel combustion system and also plays an important role in flue gas purification systems .
In conclusions, chemical used in boiler is a crucial element of boiler operation. The eight chemicals mentioned constitute the majority of chemicals used in boiler. In addition to that, they have different capabilities and properties. This will help you to choose the best chemical available in the market. However, some of these chemicals may not be available at all locations and therefore, should be determined accordingly. For example, phosphorus-based chemicals may not be suitable for installation in areas affected by nitrogen oxide pollution . It is a common practice to install phosphorus-based chemical at high altitude such as houses or commercial buildings because it is non-toxic and has a low vapor pressure .
