Muriatic acid is also known as? hydrochloric acid

Muriatic acid is also known as, hydrochloric acid, which is most famously found in the stomach juices of sharks, skates and rays. Muriatic acid is caustic but more diluted than the more concentrated form of hydrochloric acid. Muriatic acid is also found in swimming pool water that has been water-filtered to remove minerals. It's usually around 1% by weight and does not contain oxygen or hydrogen sulfide, unlike other acids such as hydrofluoric or nitric acids.


Properties of muriatic acid

1. It is soluble in water.

Muriatic acid is a strong acid and therefore dissolves in water.

2. It reacts with metals slowly.

Muriatic acid reacts slowly with metals because the metal has to be oxidized or to give up electrons in order to react. The metal is oxidized and produces hydrogen gas according to the reaction: metal + 4HCl → metal chloride + hydrogen (gas).

3. It reacts with metal oxides slowly.

Muriatic acid does not react rapidly with metal oxides such as copper oxide, zinc oxide, etc. to form metal chlorides and hydrogen.

4. It reacts with a thick layer of oxide on the surface of a metal quickly.

Uses of muriatic acid

1. The hydrogen chloride gas produced by the reaction of muriatic acid with a metal is used to clean industrial vessels, thereby removing any toxic residue.

2. It reacts with certain salts of chlorine and bromine, producing hydrogen chloride in a similar way to hydrochloric acid, but more slowly. Therefore it is used for neutralizing the muriatic acid in pools to prevent damage if an electroplating plant or an aircraft engine production line is located nearby. The resulting water is then pumped away and treated before being released into local waters via a final water purification unit.

3. It is also used in the semiconductor industry to dissolve certain oxides, such as aluminium oxide, which are hard to remove normally by chemical means and can be removed by a high temperature sintering process.

4. The hydrogen chloride produced by the reaction of muriatic acid with certain types of metal ions is used in some industrial processes for dissolving gas-barrier layers.

5. The sodium chloride that is added to swimming pools for a salt content of 1% adds sodium chloride (NaCl) to the water, thus increasing its buoyancy, and so making it possible for swimmers to swim without getting their hair wet (unless they spray themselves with seasalt).

6. Muriatic acid is also known as, hydrochloric acid, is used in the semiconductor industry to remove photoresists by dissolving them in a bath of muriatic acid and oxygenated water.
