How are polymers broken down can a question that you always ask. Polymers are broken down in many different ways, depending on what polymer is being broken down, but there are three main ways. They includes:
1. Hydrolysis
This is where the polymer is mixed with water, and then hydrolysis occurs. Hydrolysis is the breaking of a polymer (polymer in water) into smaller molecules by adding water molecules to the original molecules. For example, if you have glucose in a solution and add some hydrochloric acid, it will break down into its smallest components (monomers). It is called hydrolysis when monomer break down into its smaller parts. The addition of water causes the free-radicals to react with the other components causing reaction between them.
2. Solubility
In solubility, which means that the polymer can be dissolved in a solvent. Polymers are dissolved by adding a solvent which has a higher polarity than the polymer. The polar solvents adsorb onto the non polar parts of the polymer, and can be desorbed with heat or by using solvents and conditions with a high polarity.
3. Chemical degradation
In chemical degradation polymers are broken down into monomers by chemical agents. In this way polymers are broken down into smaller molecules, including CO2 and H2O. When they do so they produce energy in the form of heat and light; this process is called burning. This process depends on how much force is used to break the polymer down. Uses of polymers
1. Polymers in the medical industry
Polymers are used in the medical industry for prosthetics and synthetic organs. These will replace damaged or missing parts of the body including:
a. Organic polymers used for implants; these are natural polymers from animals, plants, and microorganisms that have been reformed chemically into a useable form. In some cases, they can be produced naturally by the body itself.
b. Biopolymers; these are created by living organisms.
c. Synthetic polymers made from chemicals that exist in nature.
2.Polymers in the chemical industry
Polymers are used in the chemical industry for a variety of purposes and applications, including: reinforcements, synthetic fibers, adhesives, composites, construction materials and polymer blends. The common properties of a polymer are: thermoplasticity (ability to be stretched), high strength-to-weight ratio (the ability to withstand a force without breaking), rubber-like elasticity (ability to recover its shape after being stretched), and relatively low toxicity (when compared with other man-made materials). In particular, the strength-to-weight ratio of a polymer is determined by its molecular mass distribution.
3.Polymers in the textile industry
Polymers are used in the textile industry. They can be used in filaments, yarn, and fabrics but they are also used as a replacement for some of the material that is being replaced by them, such as natural fiber. Polymers are also used to make many other products to replace the materials that were made with them over time, such as plastics and many other man-made products like synthetic fibers. 4.Polymers for plastics
Plastic is a very useful substance. They can be used for many different things, as shown in the diagram above. Polymers are used to make plastic because they are a mixture of many different chemicals and they can be molded into any shape that you want. Some of the most common plastics out there today are polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride, these all have their own properties and uses. Polyethylene is very strong and it's used to make pipes because it doesn't rust easily.
5.Other uses of polymers
Polymers are also used in other products, they can be used in some textiles such as clothing, they can also be found in some packaging to hold the items together so they stay together and they don't get damaged. They can also be used to package foods to keep them fresh and types of Polymers that are found in packaging are polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or High-density polyethylene (HDPE). Finally, the last use for Polymers is dental fillings. Dental fillings contain a mixture of silver and Polymers that are colored to match your teeth so it's not obvious that there is a filling on your tooth.
