Why does bronze not rust? Bronze is a metal that is a mixture of copper and tin. This type of metal is an alloy. The most common use for bronze is to make statues, art, coins, medals and other decorative items. It can also be used in the construction industry to make steel stronger with less weight in bridges and buildings because of its durability
The yellowish-brown color comes from the layer of oxide that forms on surface. When oxygen gets into the surface it takes away some hydrogen atoms from them which make their electrons jump up so they can accept more electrons from other atoms making their electron shells unstable. This makes the bronze weak and reduces its electrical resistance.
Various reasons why bronze does not rust
1. Layers of copper and tin
When bronze is made, it is made by mixing copper and tin in a mixture of 90% copper and 10% tin. This mixture makes the bronze a good conductor of heat and electricity but also gives the bronze its strength. The mixture also forms a protective layer on the surface that protects from oxygen from entering into the metal causing it to rust.
2. Copper's ability to protect itself from oxidation
Even though bronze is an alloy of two different metals, it still remains in its natural state because of how resistant both metals are to oxidation. The copper and tin are not able to react with oxygen because the copper is a good insulator of electricity. Copper doesn't react with oxygen because, unlike tin, it has an outer layer of electrons that form a C-O-C structure. So even though oxygen can enter into the surface, it can't form bonds with the electrons because they are too spread out and will not interfere with their movement.
3. Structure of oxides in bronze
Why does bronze not rust? The oxide layers on bronze are what make it resistant to oxidation. The oxide layer on bronze contains more aluminum oxide (alumina) than iron oxide (chromium oxide). This is because copper has combined with oxygen in a chemical reaction and the molten bronze fills all of the spaces in between the larger aluminum oxide crystals. This forms an aluminium-copper oxide. This makes bronze very resistant to corrosion because aluminum oxide is a very hard compound that is not easily dissolved.
4. Corrosion Resistance of Bronze
The corrosion resistance of bronze depends on how it was made and what materials are used to form it. Some brasses contain zinc instead of tin, but this will make it more prone to rusting than the normal 92% copper and 8% tin mixture that is used in conventional bronzes or brasses. Brass (with zinc) would be considered a brass alloy.
5. Tin's oxidation level makes bronze resistant to rust
Tin has two atoms that control its reaction with oxygen. One atom will let tin be used as an electrical conductor while the other atom controls how it reacts with oxygen in air.. The combination of these two atoms make tin molecules form layers of crystals on top of each other which makes tin resistant to corrosion.
6. A protective film that doesn't rust
The oxide layer on top of the bronze keeps it cool and prevents it from rusting because it doesn't allow oxygen to get into the metal and cause corrosion. The surface layer is not easily tarnished because it is made of tiny crystals which are indestructible. This makes bronze an excellent choice for making decorative artwork such as statues, sculptures, bronzes and brasses especially over long periods of time.
7. Bronze has a protective layering that prevents corrosion in acidic environments
Bronze is more resistant to corrosion under acidic environments because the oxide layer on top of it is protective from acids. The oxide layer that is used in making bronze also protects the metal from corrosion by itself.
8. The Tin-Oxide Film on Bronze
This protective layer makes bronze resistant to corrosion in all environments because it doesn't allow oxygen to get into the metal and cause corrosion. If a person breathed on this type of bronze, some of their sweat would come off as rain, but their skin would leave soot marks that would be washed off once they stopped sweating.
