What are the elements present in bronze? Bronze is an alloy. It contains copper, tin, and sometimes other elements such as arsenic or nickel. For example, bronze can also be made with lead or aluminium. There are two main types of bronze: alpha and beta. Alpha is a mixture of 96% copper and 4% tin which has been heated for several hours at a temperature between 1400℃-1500℃. Beta is a mixture with a high copper content (90%) which has been heated for shorter periods at higher temperatures. Around 13% of the alloying elements are arsenic and 5% nickel.

1. Copper
Copper is 90% of the Bronze alloys, it is a soft metal and highly malleable. Copper is also the second most electronegative element after gold. This means that the outer shell of the atom, which is called the valence electron shell is negatively charged. This makes it an easy target for other ions to displace and bond with, which is what occurs when bronze hardens.
2. Tin
Tin makes up 10% of Bronze alloys. The atomic symbol Sn comes from Stannum by the latin word for tin and a tin alloy is called stannum or tin bronze in some cases. The atomic number of Tin (Sn) is 50 and its atomic mass is 118.71 amu. The number of protons in this element are 33 and the atomic number is 50.
3. Manganese
Manganese is a minor constituent of bronze, usually less than 0.2% by weight. The main use for Manganese is as an alloying agent to give good machining characteristics to bronze but it can also be used as an alloying agent for Steel. The ore used to create Manganese (magnetic iron) is often very high in iron and low in manganese, iron makes up 40% of the ore and Manganese makes up only 6%. Manganese is used in tin bronze to give the metal better casting properties. Manganese will not be found in the final product unless added as an alloying agent. The atomic number of Manganese (Mn) is 25 and its atomic mass (Au) is 54.93 amu. This means that it has more protons than electrons and so has a positive charge.
4. Silicon
Silicon is found in bronze alloys as a minor constituent usually less than 0.2% by weight. The main use for silicon is for making optical glass, however it is also added to bronze to give it better casting properties. The atomic symbol of silicon (Si) comes from the latin word for silica and a silica alloy is called silica bronze or sand bronze in some cases. The atomic number of silicon (Si) is 14 and its atomic mass (Au) is 28.95 amu
5. Tin
Tin is an important constituent of bronze. It is the main reason for the colour of the metal. The atomic number of Tin is 50 and its atomic mass (Au) is 118.71 amu. This means that there are more protons than electrons and so it has a positive charge.
6. Aluminum
What are elements present in bronze? Aluminum is another important element in bronze, it prevents lead being present in bronze alloys, it stabilises the tin making it easier to extract from the ore and also makes casting easier due to better fluidity when melted. The atomic symbol of aluminium (Al) comes from the latin word for alumina and an alloy made from aluminum is called an alumina bronze in some cases. The atomic number of aluminium (Al) is 13 and its atomic weight is 26.98 amu
7. Chlorine
Chlorine makes up around 0.2% of Bronze alloys, it helps with the extraction of tin from the ore meaning that less time can be spent in the furnace giving a quicker time to sell the metal. The atomic symbol of chlorine (Cl) comes from chloride and a chloride bronze is called silver chloride bronze or finally hydrochloric acid in some cases. The atomic number of chlorine (Cl) is 17 and its atomic mass (Au) is 35.45 amu
8. Silicon
Silicon makes up 0.2% of the bronze alloys, it is added to prevent the bronze from spongy and porosity . It also gives better casting properties when melted and ensures that the metal has better fluidity. The atomic symbol of silicon (Si) comes from silica or silica in some cases. The atomic number of silicon (Si) is 14 and its atomic weight is 28.95 amu
9. Magnesium
Magnesium is added in small amounts to bronze, it is used as a flux hardening agent to improve the machining characteristics of the metal and also prevents it from spongy or porosity.
