What is the reaction between benzoic_acid and water

At temperatures above its melting point of 176 ℃, it becomes unstable and converts to the more stable cyclic form: p-hydroxybenzoic acid (m.p 263 ℃) or to benzene( substituted phenol) .

4. Benzoic acid has acidic properties in the sense that it readily donates a proton (H+ ion) to become benzoate, as shown in the figure below. Benzoic acid is a weak acid, not only because of this low pKa value (acid dissociation constant), but also because of its solubility in water - only 0.29 g/L at 20℃.

5. Benzoic acids are produced by bacteria and fungi responsible for spoiling food stored at room temperature, and they are one of the components of vaginal odor. Another role is as an intermediate compound in the metabolism of several drugs and toxic chemicals.

9. Benzoic acid serves as a disinfecting agent for wine, fruit juice and other products. Benzoic acid reacts with lipids or proteins on the surfaces of bacteria to form adducts that are practically non-irritating to mammalian tissues. This property makes it useful for use as sterilizing agent in food processing plants, tanneries and breweries (to remove bitter taste) and as a decontaminating agent by workers.

Uses of reaction benzoic acid

1. Benzoic acid is an important component of some resins used as a film former in the oil industry, and in the manufacture of cellulose acetate, acrylonitrile butadiene and similar synthetic resins.

2. Benzoic acid is used to synthesize many organic compounds, especially polymers and pharmaceuticals. These include 4-aminobenzoate (a building block of polyurethanes), parabenzoate (used in the synthesis of aspirin), benzil (used in the synthesis of indigo dye), p-phenetidine (a substrate for many antibiotics), benzaldehyde (used to form flavoring agents) and its salt benzoate, which are also used as preservatives in food and beverages, cosmetic preservatives and disinfectants

3. It is also used in organic synthesis as a reagent for the introduction of the benzoyl group into aromatic compounds. For example, benzoyl chloride is first prepared by treating benzoic acid with sodium azide in dichloromethane. Benzoyl chloride can also be produced by using propargyl bromide to treat benzyl chloride.

4. Benzoic acid is a building block of many drugs, including aspirin, vaccines and antibiotics such as penicillamine and trimethoprim. It is also used to synthesize organic acids that are used as medicine such as proton pump inhibitors.
