Fasciolopsiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Fasciolopsis buski, or Fasciolopsis for short, which parasitizes the intestines of humans and pigs. Clinically, it mainly presents gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea. The adult worms are larger, with well-developed suckers and strong adsorption capacity. The mechanical damage to the intestine caused by them is more obvious than that caused by other intestinal flukes. When there are many of them, they can cover the intestinal wall, hindering absorption and digestion. Their metabolites can cause allergic reactions after being absorbed. The adsorbed mucosa may become inflamed, hemorrhaged, edematous, necrotic, detached, and even ulcerated. Neutrophils, lymphocytes, and eosinophils infiltrate the lesion site, and the secretion of the intestinal mucosa increases. When there are many worms, abdominal pain and diarrhea often occur, as well as malnutrition, digestive disorders, decreased albumin, and various vitamin deficiencies. Diarrhea and constipation may also occur alternately, and even intestinal obstruction may occur. Severely infected children may suffer from emaciation, anemia, edema, ascites, intellectual impairment, and developmental disorders. In cases of repeated infection, a few may die from exhaustion and collapse. Pigs are the host of this parasite and the main source of infection. The disease is mainly distributed in some Asian countries in temperate and subtropical zones, such as Japan, North Korea, the Philippines and Southeast Asian countries. In China, it is more common in the southeastern coastal areas and the provinces in the Yangtze River Basin where there are abundant water resources and aquatic plants such as water chestnuts and lotus roots. According to data from the 1950s to the 1980s, the average positive rate of fecal eggs in the population was 38%, with the highest infection rate among farmers and primary school students.
