Acute injury of the musculotendon unit
The muscle-tendon unit includes the tendon, belly, tendon insertion structure, and accessory structures such as myofascia and tendon sheath. During exercise, muscle contraction generates strong stress, and the antagonist muscle is passively stretched. The tendon is composed of collagen fibers and has no contraction ability. Its function is to transmit the contraction force of the muscle to the bone tissue. The tendon fibers are wavy when resting, and the wavy disappears when stretched. When overstretched, the collagen fibers may be slightly damaged, and even tendon rupture may occur.
