Amebic liver abscess is caused by the trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica entering the liver from the intestinal lesions through the bloodstream, causing liver necrosis. It is actually a complication of amoebic colitis, but it can also occur alone without amoebic colitis. The main clinical manifestations are long-term fever, right upper abdominal or right lower chest pain, general exhaustion, liver enlargement and tenderness, and leukocytosis, and it is easy to cause chest complications. The ileocecal region and ascending colon are the common sites of amoebic colitis. The protozoa in these sites can return to the right lobe of the liver along the superior mesenteric vein, so the right lobe of the liver abscess accounts for the vast majority of cases.
