Community acquired pneumonia (CAP) is caused by a variety of microorganisms outside the hospital, such as bacteria, viruses, chlamydia and mycoplasma. Its main clinical symptoms are cough, with or without sputum and chest pain, and it has seasonal and geographical differences. It is a serious lung disease that is increasingly receiving attention from the medical community around the world.

When culture and susceptibility information are available, they should be considered in selecting or modifying antibacterial therapy. In the absence of such data, local epidemiology and susceptibility patterns may contribute to the empiric selection of therapy.
