Multiple cerebral infarction mental disorder
Multiple infarct mental disorders are caused by cerebral arteriosclerosis affecting the blood supply to the brain, especially recurrent cerebrovascular accidents. Microemboli or ischemia of sclerotic plaques in the external cerebral arteries (carotid arteries or conical basilar arteries) cause scattered small infarcts in the center of the cerebral white matter, so it is called multiple infarct dementia. Multiple infarct mental disorders often develop in middle-aged and elderly people. The degree of cerebral arteriosclerosis may vary depending on the location. The middle cerebral artery and the basilar artery are more susceptible to sclerosis. Multiple infarct mental disorders have thickening of the walls of the precapillary arteries, and more fractures of the elastic layer. Changes such as capillary hyalinization and fibrosis can also be seen in the basal ganglia. The brain has diffuse and localized atrophy, and the ventricles are enlarged. Microscopic examination shows that there are small softening foci of infarction of varying sizes in the frontal lobe and the center of the white matter. There is glial cell proliferation around the softening foci, forming small capsules or scars and epilepsy sparse areas. Neuronal degeneration and glial cell proliferation are most obvious around blood vessels. Arteriosclerosis can also be seen in organs such as the heart and kidneys, among which retinal arteriosclerosis is the most common.
