Hepatic myelopathy
Hepatic myelopathy, also known as portocaval shunt myelopathy, is a special type of neurological complication of liver disease, characterized by slowly progressive spastic paraplegia and demyelination of the lateral and posterior cords of the spinal cord. It is more common in surgical or naturally formed portocaval circulation shunts, and most cases coexist with hepatic encephalopathy. Spinal cord symptoms are often masked by severe encephalopathy consciousness and movement disorders and cannot be diagnosed until pathological examinations reveal demyelination of the posterior and lateral cords of the spinal cord.
