Retinitis pigmentosa
This disease is a slowly progressive, bilateral tapetal retinal degeneration. Determining the inheritance pattern is often difficult; most cases are autosomal recessive, but it can be autosomal dominant or X-linked, which is less common. This disease can also be part of certain syndromes (eg, Bassen-Kornzweig syndrome, Laurence-Moon-Biedl syndrome).
