Hyperaldosteronism in children
Primary hyperaldosteronism is caused by an increase in aldosterone produced by the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex, which results in sodium retention, increased blood volume, and inhibition of plasma renin activity, with clinical symptoms such as hypertension and hypokalemia. It can be caused by hyperplasia or tumors of the zona glomerulosa cells of the adrenal glands. Hyperplasia is more common in children and is often bilateral. Tumors are mostly adenomas, which are more common on the left side. Patients with no abnormalities in the adrenal glands are called idiopathic hyperaldosteronism.
