Retinal artery occlusion
The central retinal artery and its branches are peripheral arteries. Apart from the ciliary retinal artery, it is the only blood vessel that supplies nutrients to the inner layer of the retina. Any obstruction of blood supply can lead to retinal ischemia and hypoxia, which seriously damages visual function. Blockage of the central retinal artery causes acute retinal ischemia and severe visual impairment, which is one of the emergencies that lead to blindness. Therefore, early diagnosis and immediate rescue are required. If the ciliary retinal artery is present, a certain degree of central vision can still be retained.
