Post-traumatic cerebral fat embolism
Cerebral fat embolism is more common in patients with craniocerebral injury combined with long bone fractures of the limbs, or obese patients with large-area crush injuries. Fat droplets enter the ruptured venous sinuses and reach the blood circulation, causing fat embolism in multiple organs in the body. The emboli escape into the systemic circulation through the prebronchial capillary communicating branches of the lungs or through the patent oval foramen of the right atrium. Although filtered by the lungs, some of them still enter the cerebral blood vessels from the bloodstream and form cerebral fat embolism.
