Esophageal polyps are the second most common benign tumors of the esophagus, second only to esophageal leiomyoma in incidence. Since the tumor of esophageal polyps is composed of varying amounts of fibrovascular tissue, adipose tissue, and matrix from the esophageal mucosa and submucosal tissue, and the surface is covered with normal esophageal mucosa, it is prone to secondary ulcers and bleeding. The fibrous components of the tumor are either loose fibrous tissue or dense collagenous fibrous tissue, so it is also called fibroangioma, fibrolipoma, myxofibroma, or pedunculated lipoma. Bematz et al. believe that it is more appropriate to name esophageal polyps "fibrolipoma". However, it is still customary to call it esophageal polyps in clinical practice.
